Agona Swedru Senior High School (SWESCO) in Ghana’s Central Region has indefinitely suspended 25 final-year students following a violent altercation reportedly triggered by a same-sex relationship proposal.
According to school authorities, the incident began when a male student, identified as Enoch Nhyiraba, a Visual Arts student, allegedly proposed a romantic relationship to another male student, who declined the offer.
The student who rejected the proposal reportedly shared the encounter with his peers, who advised him to feign interest and set up a meeting. At the arranged meeting, a group of students believed to be allies of the student who rejected the proposal allegedly ambushed and assaulted Enoch.
In retaliation, Enoch informed his dormitory mates, leading to a reprisal attack. The situation escalated into a broader conflict involving multiple students, prompting school authorities to take disciplinary action.

The school’s headmistress, Mrs. Golda Esi Andam, confirmed that all 25 students involved were given a fair hearing before their suspension. She emphasized that while the students are being disciplined, their right to education is not being denied.
They will be allowed to write their final exams under the escort of their parents. Mrs. Andam urged all students to abide by the school’s rules and regulations to avoid future incidents.
