Ghanaian musician-turned-politician Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as Kwame A-Plus, has advocated for a state burial to honor the late Highlife legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, affectionately known as Daddy Lumba.
In an interview with blogger Nene Odompleh Bernard Kwasi of The1957News, A-Plus emphasized the profound impact Daddy Lumba had on Ghana’s music industry. He recounted a personal memory from Agona Swedru in the Central Region, where he witnessed a crowd gathered around a cassette shop, eagerly listening to Lumba’s newly released song “Makra Mo.” This, he noted, exemplified the widespread admiration and influence Lumba commanded.
When questioned about the appropriateness of a state burial for the late musician, A-Plus responded affirmatively. He drew parallels to the state funeral accorded to E.K. Nyame by then-President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, highlighting that such honors are fitting for artists of significant national influence. A-Plus further asserted that if Daddy Lumba had been based in the United States, his popularity could have rivaled that of Michael Jackson, underscoring the artist’s monumental status in Ghana.

Hon. Kwame Asare Obeng known as a Kwame A-Plus is a member of parliament for Gomoa Central.
Daddy Lumba passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital in Accra after a brief illness. He was 60 years old. Following his death, there has been a national outpouring of grief, with tributes from political leaders, fellow musicians, and fans. The Presidency has assured the public of a befitting burial for the music icon, acknowledging his immense contributions to Ghana’s cultural heritage.

His appeal reflects the deep respect and admiration held for the late musician, whose work has left an indelible mark on Ghana’s music landscape.
