Ghanaian social media commentator and political analyst, Kelvin Ekow Taylor, has been at the center of a legal controversy stemming from a bench warrant issued for his arrest in 2020. The warrant was based on allegations of contemptuous statements made in a Facebook video, where Taylor criticized Justice Eric Kyei-Baffour, accusing him of bias in a high-profile corruption trial involving the National Communications Authority (NCA).
Legal Challenge and Arguments
In response, Taylor filed an application for certiorari at the Accra High Court, seeking to nullify the bench warrant. His legal team argued that the warrant violated principles of natural justice, as he was not given a fair hearing before its issuance. They highlighted discrepancies, such as the warrant being issued in the name “Kelvin Taylor” instead of his legal name “Kevin Ekow Taylor,” and the lack of access to the alleged contemptuous material, which prevented him from verifying its authenticity or context .
Public and Legal Reactions
The case has sparked significant public debate. Legal experts and civil society organizations have weighed in, with some viewing the warrant as an overreach and a threat to free speech. Mensah Thompson, Executive Director of the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), described the warrant as “judicial tyranny,” emphasizing the need for citizens to scrutinize the judiciary’s actions

Current Status
On Tuesday, July 22, 2025, the Supreme Court of Ghana nullified a five-year-old arrest warrant issued against US-based social commentator Kevin Ekow Taylor. The court ruled that the warrant, originally issued in January 2020, violated the principle of natural justice, as Taylor was not given an opportunity to respond before its issuance.
The bench warrant had been issued by Justice Eric Kyei Baffour in response to a Facebook video in which Taylor criticized the judge, alleging bias and politically motivated actions.
